By the end of the Summary/Response unit, students will be able to:
– Analyze how an author constructs an argument, including the use of persuasion (ethos/pathos/logos), and respond to that argument by addressing the author’s supporting points
– Organize a paper using a thesis statement, topic sentences, and transitions
– Paraphrase an author’s argument without using the author’s exact words
– Recognize commonly misused words
By the end of the Research Paper unit, students will be able to:
– Form a clear argument, and later rebut the counter-argument
– Evaluate the reliability of research
– Support an argument using specific evidence from a reliable source
– Paraphrase research while using quotes where necessary
– Include in-text citations in proper MLA format
– Create a Works Cited page in MLA format
By the end of the Illustration unit, students will be able to:
– Analyze a film for repeated images, words, symbols, props, camera angles, music, etc. (bottom-up categorization)
– Formulate an interpretation that uses specific evidence as support (top-down organization)
– Integrate unusual research into a paper while making it clear where the research came from
– Edit a paper for repetition, padding, and unnecessary information
By the end of the Compare/Contrast unit, students will be able to:
– Synthesize research in order to evaluate two choices using specific criteria
– Structure an argument using an outline
– Cite research properly in MLA format, on demand
– Focus on writing clearly under pressure
